                    Archbishop Wilfred Portier...

                            and Son, Barry

“Rest well O noble son.”
He was no ordinary man.
He was an extraordinary man  I met in 1995 in which our only regret is that I did not meet him sooner. In 2011  I eulogized and committed him to his final rest with his final requested Hymn,  “Blest Be The Tie That Binds."

Archbishop Wilfred Portier passed on April 2, 2011 but throughout  his life he gave much. Most of it not recorded,  which gives the true nature of the man.  That leads to the fact that had it not been for him, the  ACW would not have been formed. In  times of spiritual struggles with his beloved AOC he never complained, but taught the  ACW  to always stand firm; it is his legacy.  His sermons at Good Shepherd, not fire brand but teaching the faith that we are doing God's business. In it all he was a man of  honor driven by his love for others.

It was in 1996, when I was lazy in accepting my charge of bishop, that he  flew to Illinois and brought order, “Hartely this foolishness must stop. You will be bishop.”  There was no more I could have said; he led me by the hand of God.

One million words could not suffice to write of him, but on this feast month of ACW, Saint Wilfred, we celebrate and remember him with love, honor and respect.  History will show he was the ACW in and around the world with echoing words of his final hymn...

Blest be the tie that binds, our hearts in Christian love
The fellowship of kindred minds, Is like that from above

When we asunder part, It gives us inward pain
But we shall still be join in heart, and hope to meet again

He remains our legacy.
