Patriarch's Vision > Patriarch Appoints Provost of ACW

2 May 2019

The office of Patriarch of a major Anglican branch like the Anglican Church Worldwide has some awesome duties and responsibilities with which, most of the time I feel unworthy to cloak myself.  The charge of setting the spiritual and motivational course of the church is something for which I have somewhat prepared, but when surrounded by spiritual giants who seem to have memorized the entire Book of Common Prayer, and know Anglican Church history all the way back to the moment St. Joseph of Arimathea established the first mission of the Jerusalem Church at Glastonbury in AD 36, I begin to feel quite small.

In the face of my shortcomings, however, I must still perform the duties that can be so vital to a growing church.  And one of those duties is to appoint qualified men of God to positions of authority in the church and to assist them in becoming a bright light, dispelling, not only the darkness of sin from our church and its circles of influence, but also, the darkness within our organization caused by years, centuries, and even millennia of human tradition crowding out the pure Gospel of Holy Scripture.

During the past few months, I have become aware of the waste of talent of our beloved Archbishop Hartley.  He is a man of noble birth with offers of assignment to high government posts in his home island nation of Barbados.  But his love of the Anglican Church Worldwide and its clergy and laity have caused him to refuse such offers of privileged rank and to carry on the ministry of the Gospel in our blessed country.  I know that he has felt pressured because of his sometimes ill health, to diminish his part in the church, choosing to retire to a posting as Dean of the Good Shepherd Cathedral.

In lengthy conversations with him, I have surmised that Abp. Hartley would be able to serve the church more fully in the office of Provost of the ACW.  His record of exemplary service as Provost in the past speaks as an excellent recommendation for him to reclaim that office.  And with his Pastor’s heart, he should also remain as the dominant leader of the Cathedral, receiving all benefits of salary and housing as that congregation desires to grant him.

Therefore, as Patriarch of the Anglican Church Worldwide, I do hereby appoint Archbishop Hartley Ward to the Office of Provost of the ACW, to serve for as long as he desires and as long as God grants him life and health, effective at 12:00 PM, Noon, this 29th Day of April, in the Year of Our Lord 2019.  Further, Ms Ella Vannoy has been chosen to work with the Provost as his Executive Assistant.  She will perform her duties from Nashville, Tennessee.

In His Service,

Patriarch Bishop J. David McGuire, DD, OHI, COSF
